Fats are a key component in nutrient absorption and the functioning of healthy cells and are a must in keeping our bodies healthy. As with carbs, there are good fats and bad fats, something that the Fitness Food Fairy can help you understand.
Fats come in four forms and although quite complex to understand, can be figured out with my simple tips.
Saturated fats are normally solid forms and are found mostly in animal sources. Monounsaturated fats have some health benefits including lowering LDL cholesterol and lowering the risk of stroke and heart disease. These fats can be found in olive oil, olives, avocados, peanut oil, seeds, nuts and my favourite, coconut oil. They are generally liquid at room temperature but solid when chilled.
Polyunsaturated fats are also liquid at room temperature and solid when chilled and are also found in olive oil, oily fish, pumpkin seeds and eggs. The omega 3 oils from oily fish are particularly beneficial to us.
Finally we have trans fat which of all fats is the worst one to consume and really needs to be kept to a minimum. Over-consumption can lead to high bad LDL cholesterol, increase the risks of strokes and heart disease and visceral fat. This bad stuff is found in all the Toxic Temptress’ favourite of fried, processed and sugary s**t.
